Recovery Work in NEPA

Update on Work in Northeastern Pennsylvania

In response to three major floods in 18 months, from April 2005 to July 1, 2008 we:

  • helped establish, guide and support Long Term Recovery Committees  (LTRCs) in 5 of our counties;
  • organized over 500 volunteers who put in over 10,000 hours of labor on 53 properties, including building an entire house for a family of five that had been flooded three times;
  • provided assessments and estimates for work needed on other properties;
  • provided advocacy for survivors as well as linked them with legal and other resources;
  • responded to FEMA requests for assistance with special needs cases throughout the region;
  • identified and provided assistance to other families in need of assistance, particularly in counties which do not yet have an LTRC; and
  • held a retreat for children and families affected by the flooding of 2006.

HELP NEEDED NOW:

Since we have had not recent disasters in our territory we encourage volunteers to travel outside our area to assist the many who have experienced floods, tornadoes, and other traumas.  For more information, go to the section called "Upcoming Service Trips."
